The team of students from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Faculty of Informatics has come ahead of 950 teams of programmers in the international competition Google Hash Code, organised by Google Corporation. The competition took place at KTU last month.
By taking the 55th place in the world KTU students were the best in Lithuania.
Google Hash Code is a programming competition, which takes place over two rounds. During the first round, competition hubs were organised for local programmers. One of these hubs was organised by KTU. In total, 467 hubs from 69 countries were competing. More than 70 programmes took part in the competition round at KTU.
“We are organising the local round for the challenge for the second time and I am very excited to see that the number of participants this year more than doubled – last year only 30 programmers participated. I think that the students have noticed the value of this competition: Google gives interesting and technically challenging tasks, which are similar to the real-life IT engineering problems”, says Mindaugas Vasiljevas, KTU PhD student, the initiator of the event.
Vilnius University Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics also contributed to the organising of local round of the challenge.
The participants of the challenge had to solve one team programming task, which took around 4 hours.
“There is always only one problem to solve, but it is very complicated and the search for solution is very time-consuming. The teams need to develop heuristic algorithms, which do not always provide the right answer”, says Vasiljevas.
The team of KTU students – Vilius Pranckaitis, Mindaugas Narušis, Vytautas Naučius ir Gvidas Janušonis – showed the best result among all teams from Lithuania. As the top 50 teams are invited to participate in the finals, Lithuanian programmers are in the waiting list.
“We still have a chance to participate in the finals, if some of the teams could not come”, Vasiljevas iš feeling hopeful.
Final round of Google Hash Code will take place in Paris on 1 April.
