The main mission of IDT is to organize, coordinate and carry out scientific research and design – testing activities in defense technologies, organize approbation and implementation of the developed equipment and technologies, to participate in preparation of highly qualified specialists, take part in university studies, carry out experimentation and consultation activities and contribute to the development and strengthening defense and national security systems of the country.

An effective state defense system is one of the key factors that determine the successful development of our country and its society. State’s national security system consists of a number of elements. It includes not only the country's armed forces and other national security institutions, but also a complex of defense industry, scientific research, technology development and specialists for state defense system. All structural parts of the complex are closely interrelated. It should not only ensure our national security by guaranteeing territorial defense, but must contribute properly to the EU and NATO collective security.

The proper contribution to the solution of these problems was made by the scientists from Kaunas University of Technology who after restoration of Lithuania’s independence started cooperation with MND (Ministry of National defense), Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and other institutions of national security. For this purpose by the Rector’s order a coordinating group was established at KTU. It included a number of highly qualified specialists who solved scientific and engineering problems actual at the time for defense institutions.

Institute of Defense technologies was established at KTU in 2000 year.(Senate Resolution No. 132 of 19 01 2000 and the order No. A-29 of 31 01 2000 of the rector “on Establishment of the Institute of Defense technologies).

Activities of the institute in the field of defense technologies was legitimated by Weaponry Fund of the Republic of Lithuania under the Ministry of the Interior (decision No. 1A-40) issuing licenses L Nr. 00028, L Nr.00029.

Its main aim - to organize, coordinate and carry out scientific research and design – testing activities, in the field of defense technologies, to organize approbation and implementation of the developed equipment and technologies, to participate in preparation of highly qualified specialists, take part in university studies, carry out experimentation and consultation activities and contribute to the development and strengthening defense and national security systems of the country. Specialists of the Institute are cooperating with the institutions of Lithuania and foreign countries when solving scientific research and specialist preparation problems in the field of defense technologies.

Research Fields

The main area of scientific research is dynamics of mechanical, electromechanical and mechatronic systems and applications in the development of training and combat facilities and technologies for defense and other areas.


FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH – Dynamics of mechanical, electromechanical and mechatronic systems:

  • Modelling,
  • Control,
  • Optimal synthesis.

APPLIED RESEARCH – Development of the new functional technological mechanisms applying the latest achievements in:

  • Military science,
  • Mechanical engineering and mechatronics,
  • Informatics,
  • Laser technologies and elektronics.

The Institute develops and has intensions of further research development on the following topics:

  • Modernization, analysis and applications of recoil imitation mechanisms for automated weapons – Simulators for training the skills of soldiers to use effectively and properly the firearms are developed. These simulators are an effective staff training means for defense structures as it allows cutting material expenditures to shorten the training time and make the process safe.
  • Development and modernization of training facilities of semi natural mortar firing – A shell model which consists of ballistic barrel and a warhead was analyzed. Physical experimentation in order to analyze external ballistics parameters of the warhead are being carried out. Initial velocities of the warhead with different charges and gas pressures generated by these charges were measured, vibration parameters of the barrel and what is the most important the drag factor of the warhead were determined. The functioning mortar imitator was designed. Dynamics of the interaction of the imitator with non deformable and deformable soil was analyzed and on the basis of the analysis results the shell detonator was developed what allowed expanding functional abilities of semi natural mortar firing.
  • Short-and medium-range missile development, testing and analysis of solid fuel rocket engines – When developing Short-and medium-range missile complexes a number of important
    scientific and technological problems was solved: the composition of solid rocket fuel was determined, its manufacture technology and facilities were developed and two modifications of the rocket engine were designed. The testing of short range missile complex KTU GTI-950 (Maximum distance range up to 10000 m.) and medium range  missile complex KTU GTI-160 (Maximum distance range up to 30000 m.) were successfully conducted at the central Pabrade ground and in Juodkrante.    
  • Theoretical and experimental research of precision piezomechanical drives and mechanisms, their computer simulation – The research performed dynamics (simulation, management, and optimal design) of mechanical, electromechanical, and mechatronic systems remains the important issue in the development of modern mechanical technologies. The research results are successfully applied for functional capabilities development of combat and space equipment.

Infrastructure

The institute has in its disposition the full complex of vibration generation, measurement, analysis and registration equipment including the scientific research facilities of the companies "RFT", "Hottinger", „Brüel & Kjear and others, lasers of visible and infrared radiation, night vision equipment, recoil testing rig of riflemen arms, the stand for testing solid fuel rocket engines equipped with traction characteristics measurement facilities and image observation system, computer network with standard and the developed for system modeling and synthesis software.


Computerized facilities for vibrational systems analysis of the Danish company „Brüel & Kjear Sound & Vibration Measurement A/S":

  • portable multichannel automated system for the analysis and data recording of vibration and acoustic processes PULSE;
  • noise meter data analysis software;

  • manual meters of vibration and impact system parameters.

The special developed stands for:

  • investigation of riflemen arms dynamics;
  • internal and external ballistics analysis of artillery systems;
  • traction temperature and pressure analysis of rocket engines.

Achievements

National

Staff members of the Institute of Defense technologies for their activities received a number of awards from scientific, public and state institutions:

  • Immanuel Kant medal of „Baltic Association of Mechanical Engineering (BAME), 2004;
  • Lithuanian Science Award, (authors B.Bakšys, M.Ragulskis) 2005;
  • Gold medals „Lithuanian Product of the Year” in the area of machinery and devices, 2000, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2014 for the developed and implemented facilities in defense institutions of Lithuania and foreign countries;
  • Kazimieras Simonavičius award of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, 2010.

NATO NSN codes are provided for the developed and implemented facilities in defense structures of Lithuania and foreign countries and they are included into NATO logistics catalog:

Solutions

IDT not only generates new scientific knowledge and develops technologies but implements them as a new products for Lithuanian Army, State Border Guard Service, educational centres of Latvian Interior and Justice Minitries and other institutions.
