Mentorship programme

Mentorship at the University

Mentorship is an educational partnership between:

  • mentor, who has more experience and competence, is able to inspire, encourage and provide a motivated person with a versatile required assistance;
  • student, who tries to take experience of the former and to adapt the acquired knowledge in the future.

Mentorship is an important modern way of education, which proved to be very efficient and useful for personal and business development in the ancient times. Nowadays many world's universities have established mentorship programmes that are used for education of quick thinking in a broader framework, transfer of acquired knowledge or facilitation of integration in the new academic, social, and cultural environment. In different countries these programmes function on a different principle, have a different title and different types of mentors, however their purpose is almost identical – development of young people. A person, who has a mentor, is able to adapt more quickly and successfully, to reach higher achievements and to not repeat the same mistakes.

Mentorship programme is active at Kaunas University of Technology since 2014. This novelty provides students with a possibility to have their own personal teacher and authority, who appreciates the student's achievements, who listens to the student, gives advice, teaches the student to study more efficiently, to think critically and creatively, develops capacities that are necessary for a career.

Mentorship programme motivates self-realization and versatile development of both the students and their mentors. It is a great possibility to communicate and to keep contact with modern youth and try to understand their needs.

Everybody can choose a mentor at the University, because there are 5 different types of mentors that students can choose at each stage of their studies. Each mentor's functions are different; therefore objectives and style of their communication vary.

Peer mentor

Your ally and friend!

Peer mentor is responsible for the success of Your first days at the University. A person that You can always trust, ask questions, have pleasant discussions and share Your concerns and success. Each academic group of a full-time first-year students of I cycle of studies has their own peer mentor, who makes sure that students' fear, uncertainty and trepidation would not exist at the University!

Note. Students, who arrive at ERASMUS programme, are welcomed and mentored by the members of ESN KTU regarding any student issues.

Peer mentor is an upperclassman, who helps the first-year students:

  • to blend into the University life;
  • to ensure a successful beginning of their studies;
  • tries to make the first steps of first-year students at the University brave and firm.

"The idea of the peer mentors this year has been great. I am a first-year student, so, like many others, I had uncertainties at the beginning:  where to go, who to address with questions, etc. My peer mentor was the person I could always address to. She never refused to help, helped me to get acquainted with the University and its order. Mentor becomes not only a helper, but also a friend. I still get along very well with my mentor, also, she encouraged me to join Students' Union and I'm very happy I made this decision. I think that having a peer mentor is an advantage to every first-year student, because he/she can ensure a good start for a "freshman" at the university, which contributes to the better results of the studies."

Dovilė
First-year student

"Peer mentorship is a brilliant and efficient part of KTU Mentorship programme, helping first-year students to adjust to the university life. When I started studying at the university, I knew nothing about this institution, everything seemed uncertain and unfamiliar; not only my peer mentor helped me to get acquainted with KTU environment and gave me advices, but also motivated me to contribute to its development. Each mentor has gathered experience and knowledge; by passing it to the first-year student, he/she can develop a student who is better educated and active."

Živilė
First-year student

"I think that mentorship programme is truly unique. It is useful to both the mentor and the first-year students, who have no knowledge of internal and external life of the university, they do not know who to address and are timid. Mentor has a great chance to expand his/her knowledge about the university, to help first-year students get accustomed to the new environment, for the group to know each other, to find new friends, to discover their new internal abilities of leadership and to show a way to those, who are looking for it."

Dovydas
First-year student

How does it work?

During the celebration of the beginning of the school year, a peer mentor gets acquainted with an academic group of first-year students, who are curated by him/her. Quite often introduction meetings take place even earlier, under initiative of the peer mentor or the students. You can find information about Your peer mentor in the academic information system (AIS), Mentorship programme section, at the end of August.

The main activity of mentor and academic group:

  • participation in the activities of the first-year students' introduction week (introduction lectures, seminars, fair of organizations, cinema evenings, sport competitions and other activity);
  • election of the coordinator of the academic group;
  • participation in the election of the most active academic group of the first-year students;
  • meetings, conversations, discussions on the subjects of University structure, studies and possibilities of financial support;
  • participation in the excursions for students to get acquainted with the space of the University, as well as with students' organizations and possibilities of spending their free time;
  • collective solving of arising problems and searching for the answers to the questions.

"When I became a peer mentor, I felt doubt and uncertainty: how will I manage the duties that I chose? What kind of mentor will I be? Will I manage to answer the questions that arise? Will I be able to communicate closely with completely unfamiliar people? All doubts disappear after you meet an academic group of first-year students. You realize how much you know about KTU system and how new and unfamiliar everything is to the first-year students. You feel that they need help and you, as a peer mentor, must help them integrate into the new environment, help them feel the difference between school and studies. You yourself control the benefits that you get while being a peer mentor. I had a chance to improve my personal qualities: communication skills, activity coordination, human resources management, I checked how I managed to communicate with a group of unfamiliar people, create an internal atmosphere and help to form a strong team. Mentorship is useful for the first-year student when a mentor is ready to help first-year students and devote his/her free time for spending it with a curated academic group. Will I participate in this programme next year? If I have a possibility, I will repeat it with a great joy and a wide smile!"

Egidijus
Peer mentor

"Newly discovered leadership skills, acquired trust in my own ideas and their implementation – this is just a small part of all that I acquired when I became a peer mentor. During participation at the selection I did not expect to find so many new friends and blend into the group of this year's first-year students so easily. I am glad that, although I am only in the second year of my studies, I see familiar faces every time I come to the faculty. Knowledge about KTU social and economic activities that I have acquired during mentorship and acquaintance with new students allow me to feel brave and secure. “

Lukas
Peer mentor

"I can bravely state that mentorship is a responsible, interesting and useful activity. Participation in various events and a competition "Most active academic group of KTU freshmen" with first-year students made indelible impression. Of course, it required a lot of effort, enthusiasm and time, but every meeting paid off emotionally. While being a peer mentor I improved my communication, organization and time planning skills. Peer mentorship is not only acquaintance with university's environment, but also a huge obligation to develop group's mutual trust and solidarity. Bringing a strong team together feels incredible!"

Academic advisor

Colleague and helper for Your studies!

Academic consulting is one of the teaching ways for students, which occurs behind the classroom door. Academic advisor focuses on student's individual needs and objectives. When students clearly realize them, they can study easier and achieve better results; they finish the studies more successfully, and use their time efficiently.

Academic advisor:

  • helps students choose study modules and make their individual study plan;
  • evaluates the need for help with study subjects;
  • opens wider possibilities at the University and outside of it;
  • recommends effective ways for problem solution;
  • helps students participate in scientific or other activity at the University;
  • helps find answers to the student's questions.

List of academic advisors

Students can find a detailed list of academic advisors in the academic information system (AIS).

Do You want to have an academic advisor?

Students, who want to have academic advisors, can choose them in their academic information system (AIS). A list of academic advisors with detailed information are available in the section of Mentorship programme of AIS according to the fields of study.

How does it work?

  • After choosing an academic advisor in the System, a student has a chance to revoke his/her choice during 24 hours. Otherwise, he/she has to apply to the organizers of Mentorship programme.
  • Student, who has chosen an academic advisor in the System, will be informed regarding the student's choice by a system's letter and will receive a request to confirm/reject his/her choice.
  • If the academic advisor confirms/rejects the student's choice, the student is notified by email sent by the university email address.
  • When a choice of the student's academic advisor is confirmed, the student must meet with his/her academic advisor at least once per semester. For achievement of better results, it is recommended to have more frequent meetings, when needed.

"I chose an academic advisor, because I wanted to get more knowledge about the university and possibilities provided by it. In my opinion, having such a mentor provides many advantages. Firstly, you have a strong support, because you know who to address when you have questions. Also, you have a chance to know the person who has more experience than you do and can share it, give advice and that is a way of personal development. In general, it is a person, who helps; it is always nice to see him/her and have a pleasant conversation over a coffee. I like to say that my academic advisor is like my "university mom". She helped me understand where I could find self-realization in the future, and that is one of my main objectives at the moment. Besides, she always provides me with the most updated information about various projects and she helped me understand that I would like to help students who have problems with studies, therefore she directed me to the right place, where I apply my knowledge for teaching of other students. I would strongly encourage other students to choose academic advisor, because I think that many people are familiar with the feeling of having many questions and not knowing who to address, or maybe you feel that you would like to blend into the university life more, but you do not know how. That is when a mentor can help you. She certainly helped me!"

Alvita
Student

"The advantages of having an academic advisor are obvious – it is a person at the faculty, who is interested in you and your welfare. I would recommend having an academic advisor to everyone, because it is really useful to have a person at the faculty that you can address with all questions!"

Monika
Student

"Recently I'm quite a successful student of two study programmes, but I terminated my studies in the past, because I had many academic difficulties, I was at a loss. When I look back, I think that if I dared to speak openly to the member of the academic personnel, I would have solved my problems and did not have to terminate my studies. When I received a letter about Mentorship programme and a possibility to choose academic mentors, I had absolutely no doubt that I had to participate. Although, when I need to, I am not afraid to address any person at the university, it still feels good to know that I have my personal advisor.I think that having an academic advisor is useful to every student. If a student has academic difficulties, his/her advisor will help to overcome them and go in the right direction. For an advanced student advisor can help set higher objectives and encourage to achieve even better results. For every student advisor will be a colleague to have a friendly conversation about studies and share a valuable experience over a coffee."

Career mentor

An example of a successful career

Career mentor is a person who has professional experience and can provide consultations on the issues of career planning and personal development. Career mentors, who participate in the Mentorship programme, have degrees in diverse study programmes and career building experience in various professional activities.

This mentor:

  • helps students pay attention to the points that are important for career and studies;
  • encourages setting of the objectives of personal career and their implementation;
  • teaches and gives advice on the issues of communication and cooperation skills;
  • advices on the things that should be addressed during studies;
  • motivates to achieve good results;
  • helps students make a personal development plan and advices on its implementation;
  • helps develop leadership capacities.

Do You want to have a career mentor?

At the beginning of the autumn semester students, who want to have a career mentor, apply by filling an e-questionnaire in the academic information system (AIS) with available list of career mentors. Participating in the selection provides a possibility to choose a few career mentors by priorities.

What do You have to do?

  • Consider why You need a career mentor; set Your objectives and priorities.
  • When selection begins (10-25 of September) chose mentors in the order of priorities, based on Your set objectives (up to 3 mentors), from the System.
  • Do not forget to write a motivation letter in the questionnaire, which would indicate a clear motivation for participation in this programme and why exactly one of the chosen mentors can be assigned to You.

How does it work?

  • During the first selection the data from the student's questionnaire is considered: motivation letter, student's objectives for participation in this programme.
  • The second selection (5-9 of October) consists of interviews with the commission for career mentor selection and the students who passed the first stage of selection. During those interviews, student's motivation, a need for a career mentor and criteria given by the mentor are key considerations.
  • Students are notified about their assigned mentors until 20 of October.
  • A student, who has been assigned a mentor, has to contact him/her regarding the first meeting during 10 days. The student must record a meeting date in the System.

Students, who have offers regarding possible career mentors, are recommended to apply to the organizers of Mentorship programme.

"When I got a career mentor, my motivation increased and I was happy that they chose me. The major benefit – a mentor renders his knowledge and experience to me, teaches specifics of business, gives advice in certain situations, helps build a perception of the objective, that is why I really recommend a participation in this programme for people who want to get as much benefit from life as possible. Mentor will answer your questions, will encourage your personal development and performance of the activity that you had no courage to perform earlier, and most important, will share his/her experience and advice so facilitate the student's life."

Deividas
Student

"When I found out that I got a career mentor, I had mixed feelings. At first I was sad, because I did not get any of the mentors that I chose, but later I felt surprised and happy, because coordinator of the career mentors offered me a different mentor at her discretion and I am grateful that I was not left without a mentor. Besides, it was quite a challenge and a good experience of writing a motivation letter and participation in the selection interview. Advantages and benefit depends on your own attempts of cooperation with your mentor. Of course, it also largely depends on the mentor's areas of interest, skills, hobbies, etc., that is why it is important to choose a suitable mentor. We have individual and group sessions with mentor. So far, we have been trying to set the right objectives during individual sessions. Also, I try to acquire knowledge from my mentor on self-disposition for achievement of objectives, communication with people, other ways to achieve good results in education. His experience and stories of success help me see university life in a different way and encourage my personal development. Furthermore, a mentor enables to expand my circle of acquaintances. Although, he is not directly related to the field of my future work, but, at my request, he promised to organize a meeting with a manager who works in that environment.  During group sessions we focus more on better understanding of ourselves: we perform various psychological exercises that reveal our personal qualities, increase self-confidence and motivation not to stop and to move on. I would surely recommend participation in the Mentorship programme. It is a great possibility for a versatile personal development. Career mentor is not responsible for a job search, he directs towards the right path and gives many good lifelike advices how to get and discover what you want from life. It is relevant to note that cooperation with a career mentor can be as often as you want or need. Therefore you should not be afraid to try. If you do not like your mentor, you can always try and change something, address to KTU Students Information Centre. People who work there are both willing to help and able to solve all the problems. It is important to have enough resolution and willingness to acknowledge.”

"I decided to participate in the programme of career mentors in spring, when I noticed that the list contains one mentor that I wanted to choose very much. But it was too late. I was one day late and I could not send my application. So, I have been looking forward to a new school year, when a new selection for the mentorship programme begins. As soon as it was announced, I filled my application and sent it. Waiting seemed an eternity, but I was lucky and I received an email with an invitation to come to an interview. I was enormously nervous before the interview, but I knew what I wanted and why I went to this programme. For me, my chosen mentor was an example, an authority, a source of inspiration and many other things that encourage to achieve your objectives and not to give up. Thus, when I found out that she would be my mentor, I was very happy and quickly announced it to people who were close to me, supported me and encouraged to participate in this programme. Also, on the same day I contacted my mentor and could not believe how friendly, caring and understanding she was. During our first meeting I told her all my ideas. She patiently listened to me and said: "We will do it, do not worry, I will help you and it will be successful. I believe in you." Since that meeting I was constantly writing to her regarding various questions and asked for her advice, and she helped me as much as she could. I think this mentor was a guarantee of my success, when I was accepted to the event Design Days'14 and gave an excellent performance. To everybody who wants their dreams to come true, have an endless wish to improve, to learn something new and interesting, I recommend participation in this programme; not only it can come true, but you may also discover something you have not expected: a friend, new acquaintances, and maybe you will find out something new about yourself."

Julija

"When I found out that I was chosen for the Mentorship programme and the career mentor chosen by me, I acquired more self-confidence, because it was very nice to be chosen of a number of the willing students. At the beginning I thought that it would be a deeper knowledge of the subject of the lecture that I was interested in, in a small group of listeners. However, when I saw that I would have personal communication and meetings with my career mentor, it gave me motivation and made me intensify me efforts. Having a career mentor can provide you with a practical introduction to the profession that interests you. During communication with a person who shows you internal introduction of his/her work, observing his/her schedule and level of occupation, you can understand if the subject of your studies really interests you and if you really want to have more or less similar work. Therefore, the major benefit of this programme is verification if you are going in the right direction.Not only do I recommend, but I also encourage to choose a career mentor. It is a unique possibility to be close to the person, who is so busy, but at the same time he/she can devote his/her precious time to you, to hear their success story, which motivates and encourages to create your own."

    Research mentor

    Reveal a talent of the scientist, have Your personal helper!

    Our whole life we are accompanied by curiosity and wish to know more, to prove, to discover. However, it is most characteristic to those, who have a mind of the scientist. Such students are invited not to hesitate and during their studies pursue their interest in scientific research and contribute to creation of innovations and inventions. Research mentor is a member of the academic personnel who has experience in scientific field (scientist or researcher). He/she can provide consultations on the issues of scientific activity or help start working in the field of scientific research. Also, research mentor teaches to think objectively, to raise questions, to plan and conduct research and analyse received data, because research performed by the students is the basis for university studies and a practical adaptation of their knowledge.

    Research mentor will help You:

    • begin the activity of scientific research;

    Student dormitories

    Our dormitories are not only modern and attractive, they are also great places to work, relax, socialise and meet new friends. Within the dormitories you will find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and a real community spirit.

    In total KTU has 12 dormitories where all undergraduate, Master‘s and PhD students, as well as University guests and staff may be accommodated. From 2013, dormitory No. 5 is announced an International Residence. However, international students also live in dormitories No. 2, No. 7, No. 8 (new) and others.

    All the rooms (single or double) are equipped with all the necessary furniture for life and studies: a bed, a chair, a desk and a wardrobe. For international students bedding is provided. There is a kitchen with a cooker, a hob, fridge freezer and meal preparing area. All the residents of the dormitories have the Internet access. Also, free laundry and drying facilities are available on the site.

    The monthly rent prices at the student dormitories are fixed:

    1. 115,85 EUR – single room;
    2. 86,89 EUR – double room / price for a person.

    The refundable deposit of 115,85 EUR or 86,89 EUR must be paid within few days of arrival. If you stay in the dormitory less than 2 month, the deposit is not returned. The monthly rent must be paid by the 25th of each month. As a general rule, good manners and cleanliness are expected in the dormitory.

    For example, if you start living in the dormitory from the 14 of August, the rent is calculated for the whole month.

    A student who wishes to be accommodated in the dormitory can do so while applying online at apply.ktu.edu.

    During the application process you should notify if you want a dormitory accommodation (however you can move in or out during the studies as well). The distribution of rooms according to your priorities depends on the application or tuition fee payment date, and you will be informed about your residence place before your arrival.

    All information about University dormitories can be found in KTU dormitories webpage.

    Reminder

    1. Inform the International Office about the date of your arrival that we could prepare the room for you. Even if you arrive at late hour, ring the door of your dormitory and you will be let in. Your name, the key and other related information will be left at the dormitory’s door keeper.
    2. Within the next days after your arrival you will get an invoice to pay a deposit for living in the dormitory (86,89-115,85 EUR; the fees may change – all recent information may be found on KTU webpage).
    3. You will get a personal dormitory pass you need to show every time you enter the dormitory.
    4. Request to have internet connection in your room may be met only after you pay the deposit fee.
    5. Read the rules of living in KTU dormitory carefully to know your rights and responsibilities, etc.
    6. Inform the dormitory about your leaving date (after studies, finding private rent, etc.) 1 month in advance.

    Health

    The Lithuanian health system is organized around the family doctor (Family Clinics). When you have a medical problem, the family doctor is the first to contact, except in cases of the emergency. If you need to consult with a certain specialist, first you have to go to the family doctor to get a referral. Medication prescribed by a doctor can be bought at the nearest pharmacy (LT – “Vaistinė”). The purchase of some medicine requires a doctor’s prescription.

    There are many Primary Health Care Institutions (larger than Family Clinics) in Kaunas belonging to the Lithuanian National Health System. They have not only family doctors but also various specialists working there, and you can have more health examinations at the same place.

    Our recommendation

    InMedica Clinic (Savanorių pr. 169) provides medical health care services to foreign students in English and Russian languages.

    To make an appointment you should call by phone +370 37 202882 and ask for receptionist Akvilė (she speaks English). Please mention that you are KTU student while making the appointment. Do not forget your identification document and health insurance (private one or European Health Insurance Card), when going to the clinic.

    • If you need a family doctor service, you should get appointment with family doctor K. Borkienė (speaks English, Russian) .
    • If you need help of psychologist or psychiatrist please get appointment with psychiatrists D. Gudienė (speaks English, Russian).

    Doctors will provide required help and if needed will direct you to medical specialists for further help and treatment. InMedica Clinic provides not only the family doctor’s service but also has various specialists working there, and you can have more health examinations at the same place: gynecologist, otolaryngologist, endocrinologist, dentist, echoscope, cardiologist and others.

    Medical services for foreign students are paid. However, holders of European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are entitled to necessary medical care services free of charge. Holders of Private Health insurance have to pay for the services by themselves. Do not forget to collect all receipts, prescriptions etc. and give it to yours private insurance company, which will reimburse the expenses according to the conditions of your health insurance policy. Therefore, please read the conditions of your health insurance carefully in advance.

    InMedica provides discounts for KTU students:

    • 10% discount on dental services;
    • 5% discount on other tests.

    Health Insurance

    All international students must have medical insurance valid in Lithuania for the study period (can be renewed every year). The insurance can be obtained in the student’s home country or from a Lithuanian insurance company upon arrival.

    Health insurance for EU citizens

    Students from EU countries are not required to have any special health insurance. European health insurance card or form E111 confirming that a student has EU health insurance is valid in Lithuania.

    Health insurance for non-EU citizens

    Students from non-EU countries may obtain their health insurance either in their home country or in Lithuania.

    If you come to Lithuania without visa, make the health insurance for 3 months and then extend it when you apply for visa or Temporary residence permit (TRP).

    If you came holding national visa D, it means you should have health insurance for the period of visa. When you get TRP, it is more convenient to obtain health insurance in Lithuania.

    Health insurance costs about 50 EUR (unconditional deductible* – about 90 EUR) or about 140 EUR (unconditional deductible* – 0 EUR) per year if you purchase it in Lithuania.

    Unconditional deductible – the amount that will be deducted from the amount of loss/expenses in case of every insured event. Deductible can be indicated either in EUR or as a percentage of the insurance amount. Usually the amount of deductible is not subtracted from the total insurance amount.

    For example, the insurance amount is 5792,4 EUR, deductible is 90 EUR. In case of insured event the insurance company will cover expenses above 90 EUR and below 5792,4 EUR. Thus if the expenses of insured event are 250 EUR, 90 EUR will be deduction that you have to cover by your own while the remaining expenses of 160 EUR will be covered by the insurance company. Please ask about all conditions of your insurance before paying for it.

Debates  are run in so-called British Parliamentary format (as the form of debates is based on the example of British Parliament): four teams of two people try to prove that their position on a certain subject is right, based on their experience and personal knowledge. Debates are conducted in English.
    Debates develop ability to present arguments in a suitable and logical manner, to speak publicly; also people learn to gain a versatile approach towards controversial political, social and cultural subjects. Whereas only a rational argument is acceptable in debates, students learn to have an objective approach towards things, their tolerance to opponent point of view is encouraged.
    Participants of debates take the view that "everything is debateable". Therefore, nothing is self-evident, even obvious truths can be disputed, which broadens horizons and promotes critical thinking.
